This speech time calculator tells you whether your script fits its slot. Enter a word count — or paste the whole speech — set your speaking pace, and see the delivery time before you ever stand up.
It is built for wedding toasts, keynotes, class presentations, sermons and award speeches, where running over (or falling short) is awkward.
How to use the speech time calculator
- Paste your speech, or enter its word count.
- Set the pace slider to your natural speaking speed.
- Check the delivery time, then trim or expand to hit your slot with a small buffer.
How many words per minute should you plan for?
Most speakers deliver 120–150 words per minute. A calm, clear pace of about 130 wpm is a safe default; nerves tend to speed people up, so rehearsing against a timer is the best insurance. Slow down for emphasis, complex ideas, or a large room where you need pauses to land points.
Words needed for common speech lengths
| Slot | Words (approx.) |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | ~130 words |
| 3 minutes | ~390 words |
| 5 minutes | ~650 words |
| 10 minutes | ~1,300 words |
| 20 minutes (TED-style) | ~2,600 words |
Always aim slightly under, since real delivery includes pauses, applause and ad-libs.
