This typing speed test measures your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy as you type. Start typing the sample text and the timer starts automatically; when it ends you get your speed and accuracy score.
It is a fast, free way to benchmark your typing, track your progress over time, and warm up before a test or a big writing session.
How to take the test
- Click into the box and start typing the sample text.
- The timer begins on your first keystroke.
- Type accurately — mistakes count against your score.
- When time is up, read your WPM and accuracy, then restart to try again.
How your score is measured
Your WPM is based on correctly typed characters divided by five — the standard definition of a “word” — over the time elapsed. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly. Because errors are excluded from the word count, typing fast but sloppily actually lowers your score: steady and accurate wins.
Average typing speeds
| Speed | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 30 WPM | Beginner / hunt-and-peck |
| 40 WPM | Average |
| 60–80 WPM | Fast / professional |
| 90+ WPM | Expert |
How to type faster
Use touch typing (all ten fingers, home row) and keep your eyes on the text, not the keyboard. Prioritise accuracy first — speed follows once the movements are automatic. Short, regular practice beats occasional long sessions, and good posture keeps you comfortable enough to improve.
