This vowel and consonant counter tallies the vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and consonants in your text in real time, alongside word and character totals. It is handy for phonics and spelling lessons, word games and puzzles, and quick linguistics checks.

How to use the vowel & consonant counter

  1. Type or paste your text, or a single word, into the box.
  2. Read the vowel and consonant tiles for the totals.
  3. Compare them with the word and character figures shown alongside.

How letters are classified

The five letters a, e, i, o and u are counted as vowels; every other letter of the alphabet is counted as a consonant. Numbers, spaces and punctuation are ignored by both totals. The letter “y” is treated as a consonant here, since it is a consonant more often than not and this keeps the count predictable.

Where a vowel and consonant count helps

  • Teachers & parents — build phonics and spelling exercises.
  • Puzzle fans — plan Wordle, Scrabble or hangman guesses by vowel balance.
  • Language learners — study the sound patterns of new words.
  • Curious writers — see how vowel-heavy a name or slogan is.

Frequently asked questions

Is “y” a vowel or a consonant?

This tool counts “y” as a consonant. In English it can act as either depending on the word (as in “happy” or “myth”), but it is classed as a consonant here for a consistent, predictable count.

Are spaces, numbers and punctuation counted?

No. Only alphabetic letters are classified as vowels or consonants. Spaces, digits and symbols are excluded from both totals but still appear in the character count.

Can I count the vowels in a single word?

Yes. Just type or paste the one word and read the vowel and consonant tiles.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything is counted locally in your browser, so nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
