This words per minute (WPM) calculator works out your speed from a word count and the time it took. Use it to measure typing or reading speed when you already know both numbers — no full test required.
It is handy for logging progress over time, checking a timed reading exercise, or converting a known duration into a WPM figure.
How to use the WPM calculator
- Enter the number of words typed or read.
- Enter the time taken in minutes and seconds.
- Read your words-per-minute result and the rating below it.
How WPM is calculated
Words per minute is simply the word count divided by the time in minutes: WPM = words ÷ minutes. For typing tests, speed is usually based on correct words, and a “word” is standardised as five characters, so accuracy matters as much as raw pace.
What is a good WPM?
| Speed | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 30 wpm | Beginner / hunt-and-peck |
| 40 wpm | Average typist |
| 60–75 wpm | Fast, professional level |
| 90+ wpm | Expert |
For silent reading the numbers are much higher — an average adult reads around 238 wpm.
