Words Per Minute (WPM) Calculator

Work out your typing or reading speed.

words per minute

This words per minute (WPM) calculator works out your speed from a word count and the time it took. Use it to measure typing or reading speed when you already know both numbers — no full test required.

It is handy for logging progress over time, checking a timed reading exercise, or converting a known duration into a WPM figure.

How to use the WPM calculator

  1. Enter the number of words typed or read.
  2. Enter the time taken in minutes and seconds.
  3. Read your words-per-minute result and the rating below it.

How WPM is calculated

Words per minute is simply the word count divided by the time in minutes: WPM = words ÷ minutes. For typing tests, speed is usually based on correct words, and a “word” is standardised as five characters, so accuracy matters as much as raw pace.

What is a good WPM?

SpeedLevel
Under 30 wpmBeginner / hunt-and-peck
40 wpmAverage typist
60–75 wpmFast, professional level
90+ wpmExpert

For silent reading the numbers are much higher — an average adult reads around 238 wpm.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

Words per minute is the number of words divided by the time in minutes. This tool does the maths for you from minutes and seconds.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 wpm is average. 60–75 wpm is fast and professional, and expert typists exceed 90 wpm.

What counts as a “word” in typing tests?

By convention a word is five characters including spaces, so typing speed can be compared fairly regardless of how long the actual words are.

Do I want to measure typing or reading speed?

Either — the maths is the same. To take an actual timed typing test instead, use the typing test tool.
